Department of Microbiology & Immunology Overview
The Department of Microbiology & Immunology is responsible for training competent physicians in diagnosing and treating diseases caused by microorganisms (bacteria, viruses, fungi, parasites) and immune disorders. It also prepares researchers to:
- Isolate & identify pathogens using advanced diagnostic techniques
- Detect microbial mutations and antibiotic resistance patterns
- Develop solutions for drug-resistant infections
Mission To enhance integrated education with other basic and clinical sciences by:
- Advancing research in infectious diseases & immunology
- Modernizing teaching methods to match global scientific progress
- Strengthening collaborative research within and outside the college
- Improving public health through diagnostic & therapeutic innovations
Objectives
- Train medical students to meet increasing academic demands and continuously develop the department.
- Prepare Iraqi & Arab Board trainees in: Clinical Microbiology & Immunology Related specialties (Ophthalmology, Dermatology, Rheumatology)
- Review & update curricula to align with community needs and scientific advancements.
- Develop high-quality research protocols in microbiology & immunology.
- Enhance collaboration with higher education institutions for supervision and evaluation.
- Provide scientific consultations to the Ministry of Health, including:
- Vaccination & immunization committees Viral hepatitis, polio, and influenza surveillance Laboratory diagnostic standards Key Focus Areas Diagnostic & Clinical Training
- Bacteriology & Virology (culture, PCR, sequencing)
- Parasitology & Mycology (microscopy, serology)
- Immunology (autoimmune diseases, hypersensitivity, vaccines)
- Research & Innovation Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) studies
- Epidemiological tracking of outbreaks
- Vaccine development & efficacy testing Community Health Impact Public health advisory roles Hospital lab quality control Pandemic response planning
