Department of Pharmacology Overview
Established in the 2016–2017 academic year, the Department of Pharmacology provides an integrated curriculum for third-year medical students, equipping them with the theoretical knowledge and practical skills essential for rational drug therapy in future medical practice.
Vision To ensure that medical students acquire:
- Comprehensive theoretical knowledge of drugs and therapeutics
- Practical expertise in drug use and prescription
- The ability to optimize drug therapy and specialize in pharmacology Objectives The department aims to:
- Teach mechanisms of drug action at cellular and molecular levels
- Explain drug absorption, distribution, metabolism, and excretion (ADME)
- Classify drugs based on their effects on body systems
- Highlight essential & commonly used drugs, including their side effects & contraindications
- Train students in acute drug/chemical poisoning management
- Address drug-related issues (e.g., addiction, misuse)
- Develop self-learning skills to stay updated with new medications
- Teach proper prescription writing (legal & systematic methods)
- Conduct lab experiments to reinforce theoretical knowledge Teaching & Learning Methods Theoretical lectures (drug classifications, mechanisms, interactions) Practical sessions (dose calculations, animal testing under supervision) Small-group discussions (case-based learning) E-learning & scientific databases (for self-study) Lab experiments (applying pharmacology principles)
